Solving a pottery problem My new studio! I’ve been making pottery again (finally!) in the new studio space at my house. I actually managed to get a space in the garage cleaned out where I now have a wheel, kiln, shelf space, and a table. Later, I’ll post about the nerdy setup I’ve put together for my kiln that will collect data about firings. For now, I have just been trying to make some pots and get a feel for the clay again, as it has been about a year since I did any work.

Build Inspiration Having had such a good time with my last mask build, I was looking forward to the Carrack’s annual fundraising event, the Muse Masquerade. It provided an excellent reason for me to continue exploring mask making.
The theme I went with for the 2017 event came from my very own muse, who suggested that we could go as the Owl and the Pussycat, but with a steampunk twist. If you aren’t familiar with the poem, The Owl and the Pussycat, you can read it here.

Updates to the Pottery Gallery I have added a new batch of pots to my portfolio in the Pottery Galery. These will likely trickle out via Instagram, as well. The one in the banner photo was particularly photogenic. It uses a couple of my favorite techniques.
There’s the chattering texture that I created using a tool I made with a hacksaw blade following this method. It was very easy to do and is a great use for old blades.

Build Inspiration Muse Masquerade The [Muse Masquerade] muse is an annual benefit for the Carrack carrack modern art gallery, a local, artist-centered space. It is an evening of costumes, artist sideshows, dance performances, and other masqueradey fun. I’ve been the last few years and it has been a great excuse to try my hand at making masks.
The Pumpkin King The first time I attended this even, I decided to go as Jack Skellington, from Tim Burton’s, The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Social media is great for some things.

There are times when I want to tell a longer story than what makes sense in the sound bite world of social media.
I’ve been making things and trying to capture that along the way. I’d like to share what I’ve done and learned along the way. I also would like to save that for my kids to see.
This helps me take time and reflect and to be able to look back and see improvement over time in the things I actually spend time on.
